🙈 WATCH OUT for the Monkey Phish
If you were a hacker, what would you call yourself?
Probably something cool like:
🐺 DarkWolf
💀 404StillAlive
👤 EncryptedShadow
🍼 Spoiled_Doodh_420
But this crypto hacker is calling himself — Monkey Drainer. That’s like Rajpal Yadav being an evil mastermind in a movie. 🤣

While the name is not-so-threatening, the actions are HELLA scary. 😨
In this week alone, Monkey Drainer stole $7 million (Rs 57 crore) in crypto!!
And he’s not sticking to just one crypto cuisine. This dude is like me at my friend’s wedding, loading up on EVERYTHING:
fake airdrop
fake NFT mints
dubious Defi coins
And a lot more!
You’d think this guy would be using a RANGE of different techniques to scam these people.
But nope. He’s using a simple playbook.
All of his scams comprise of a simple 4 step approach!
1️⃣ Set up a fake giveaway
He posts this giveaway from a look-a-like Twitter account of something that is hot and trending. Last week it was Aptos, this week it was RTFTK.
Something like this 👇

2️⃣ Embeds a phishing link
In the giveaway tweet, he adds a “not so suspicious” link to the project right at the end.
And he makes sure to add a picture or GIF so that the link preview is not visible and Twitter does not hide the link.
To promote the link, the hacker spams a buncha bots to 🔁 Quote Tweet 🔁 the giveaway tweet.
3️⃣ User connects wallet (to mint NFT, receive airdrops)
Once the user lands on the website, they’re met with JUICY words like:
🤤 Free airdrop 🤤
💎 Claim your tokens 💎
👉 Mint your Gasless NFT 👈
And to get this — of course — you gotta connect your wallet.
4️⃣ Deploys BAD code
BAM!! The hacker deploys a code to process a bunch of transactions from their account to yours.
Some victims got a chance to access their account and reject outgoing transactions.
But most of them didn’t.
Here’s what was lost:
$370,000 in crypto
14 NFTs (including 1 BAYC)
All of these are from over 7.4k transactions which were initiated from phishing sites and giveaway tweets.
💀

🤨 Where are all the crypto SCAMS happening?
Scams are pretty rampant in crypto.
And they are happening faster than YouTuboors and threadoors can talk about it. 🥲
And we at the doodhwala know quite a bit about scams. 😎
I mean…look at our past few editions:
But on which chain are most of these scams actually happening?
Is it on Vitalik bhai’s Ethereum, Tanmay Bhat’s fav Solana or some other chain?
The answer is pretty pretty pretty interesting.
It’s one of the most decentralized chains with a whopping 21 validators (lol)
It’s the BNB chain. 🥶
According to a report by Solidus Labs, BNB Chain has around 1.5 lakh scam contracts deployed since August 2020, and Ethereum is in second place with 13.5k scam contracts.

One of the biggest scams or rug pulls on the BNB Chain was the fall of the infamous $SQUID which cost investors around $3 million and gave us the chart drop of the decade 👇

But why are so many scams happening on BNB? 🤷♂️
Although the report does not talk about it, the incredibly smart team at the doodhwala can take a few guesses.
BNB chain has super cheap gas fees (Its cheap to spin up contracts) 💰
It is one of the older L1 chains (More people have been using it for a longer time) ⚡️
Fully permissionless infrastructure (Anyone can deploy anything) 🤝
With $5.6 billion locked up on the chain, which is 10% of the overall DeFi TVL, it seems like it’s pretty easy to create contracts that aren’t fully verified, quickly collect investor funds and sprint away.
But don’t worry, the doodhwala will send a WeChat message to CZ and get his whole thing sorted.
Just like how they “sorted out” a $100 million exploit of the BNB chain by reaching out to the 21 validators and kindly requesting them to pause the chain. 🤗
