🏏 Can web3 change sports?
Gm, this is your favourite Doodhwala. We’re like that one good friend who gives you first batting all the time.
Today’s Saturday!
Instead of a recap, we want to share something interesting we found!
We’re calling this — Something cool Saturdays
No, it’s not an auto drive that accepts the Rs 10 coin. That’s mad rare!
We’re talking about sports, and how web3 can change it!
In fact, one desi company already is! 👀
Let’s get into it.

How deep is your sports love?
The relationship between finance and sports in this country has been….shady.
For years, Indian cricket has been caught in:
match-fixing scandals (remember Sreesanth?)
failed leagues (remember ICL, the predecessor to the IPL?)
the recent trend - online gambling through fantasy team builders
financial problems with franchise owners (remember India Cements, Mallya?)
These scandals affect the outcome of the game. And a few people make money off it!
But they aren’t the ones for whom the game is played.
It’s played for the fans.
Peeps like you and me, and my boy Raghu who always gets that brand new Wilson ball!
This is where web3 companies come in!
Web3 companies have the power to:
Tie together communities through the blockchain + Incentivize through cryptocurrencies
————————————————————-
= Mad combination!
Especially in a sports-crazed country like India.
These communities can EVEN have a say in how a team does things.
Things like:
fan chants
stadium names
team bus colours
They can even choose their team mascot. But we will never replace Mr. Nags!

Socios, a web3 company, is doing exactly this with football clubs in Europe.
So, far they’ve partnered with and launched tokens for:
PSG (that club Messi is in)
Juventus (that club Ronaldo was in)
Arsenal (that club your older brother supports)
Manchester City (that club your younger brother supports)
Now an Indian web3 company is getting in on fan communities!
Meet Sportzchain
It’s a web3 fan engagement company built on Ethereum and Polygon!
And they’re partnering with the no. 2 sports league in the country!
It’s not ISL (Indian Super League), not PBL (Premier Badminton League) and not even Cancelling Goa Plans league (CGP).
It’s the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL).
Fans have already decided on the league’s kabaddi teams’ jerseys and auctions!
They’re also selling sports memorabilia as digital NFTs, launching tokens for tokenized say and ownership of teams, and even a native token!
Pretty cool, right?
Why is Doodhwala excited about this?
We are sports fans and we want to see web3 change sports for the better.
More importantly, we as fans want to participate in sports leagues.
Sure, sports betting companies allow users to participate in the results, but its kinda like gambling tbh. It gives us the heebie-jeebies!
Fan communities often have no association with the outcome of a sports game.
But it gives fans a say in the things that make them part of the team — the team colours, bus, jersey, stadium, chants, captains, legends, and more!
The blockchain can denote ownership.
Tokens can be used for voting.
And fans can participate!
Doodhwala 🤝 Sportswalas!
That’s all for today bhaiyo aur bheno! Monday Sigona!
