🍣 Sushi hacked for $3 million

Our second-favorite dish and 47th-favorite DEX was hacked this weekend.

But the victim of the hack is a fellow hacker himself.

Yess! The master hacker got hacked! 😲

On April 6, a hacker planted a bug in SushiSwap’s smart contract.

No, not a stomach bug that you get when you eat some roadside momos, it’s more like a software bug. 👾

The thing is – the bug didn’t drain EVERYONE’s funds.

It drained just ONE DUDE’s funds. A guy named 0xSifu (more on him later).

How much was drained?

1800 ETH = $3.3 million = 69 million doodh bottles 🥛

How did it happen?

1️⃣ SushiSwap’s contract – The RouteProcessor2 contract – had an approval bug planted by the hacker.

2️⃣ The wallets that interacted with SushiSwap (since the bug was added) gave the DEX permission to swap the crypto from their wallets

3️⃣ This bug allowed the hacker to take custody of the funds aka hack tf outta everyone and take everything

Who’s affected?

So far, there’s just been 1️⃣ victim.

But all the wallets that used SushiSwap in the past 4 days are at risk.

The total number of wallets at risk = Over 2,500 🤯 🤯 🤯

Here’s how they’re split by blockchain:

🔵 Arbitrum → 1,400 wallets🟣 Polygon → 470 wallets🔴 Optimism → 184 wallets🔘 Ethereum → 156 wallets🟡 BSC → 107 wallets🔺 Avalanche → 90 wallets

How can I not be hacked?

Easy. Read the doodhwala 🤣

But seriously, you can revoke access to protocols (like SushiSwap) from accessing your crypto.

You can check if your address is affected using this. And revoke access using this. These resources were created by the 🔥 folks at DeFi Llama.

Already 64% of the 2,500 at-risk wallet addresses have revoked access to SushiSwap.

What happened to the funds?

Once the hack was revealed, the hacker couldn't really move the funds easily.

So, part of it was returned. And part of it was caught.

90 ETH → returned by the hacker

100 ETH → recovered by BlockSec

110 ETH → sent to Lido Finance

700 ETH → sent to BeaverBuilder

remaining 800 ETH → sent to random accounts

WTF is happening?

Honestly, it's too early to say what's happening.

It's 9am and I'm still half asleep lmao. 🤣

But what's interesting is who the ONLY victim is – 0xSifu.

This guy:

The guy's ☝️ got a goatee that screams "Don't trust me with your money!"

Here's his resume:

• Spent 18 months in a US prision then was deported to Canada

• Was involved with QuadrigaCX (the 🇨🇦 BTC exchange who's founder died mysteriously)

• Was the anonymous Treasury Head of Wonderland, a DeFi project that went bust in 2021

• Changed his name (at least) 3 times from Michael Patryn → Omar Dhanani → And now he goes by Master Shifu

So, was this hack a case of divine payback or something else? 👀

Every time a memory is stolen, its price increases by 0.001 ETH + 10% of the previous price.
